What does a School Counseling Department do?

Here at Preston High School we do more than change schedules. We are here to help every student succeed in school and beyond. Here is some more information about what we do!
As a Counseling Department, we want all students to feel welcome to come in and talk to us about many different things. Here's a sample list of some of the things we love talking to students/parents about:
  1. Information about classes offered at PHS
  2. College preparation (ACT/SAT, Scholarships, FAFSA, etc.)
  3. Career and post-secondary training opportunities (BTech, Internships, Apprenticeships, etc.)
  4. Class Schedule Changes
  5. 4-Year High School Course Plans
  6. One-on-one PCCR (Plan for College and Career Readiness) Meetings
  7. Social/Emotional Skills - Crisis Counseling when necessary
A school counselor is a trained professional who provides academic, career, and emotional support to students. They help students navigate personal challenges, develop social skills, and plan for their future education and careers, while also collaborating with teachers and parents to create a positive school environment. At PHS we offer the following services:
  • Small Group Counseling
  • Classroom Workshops
  • Crisis Counseling
  • Academic Advising
  • SEL/ and CCA Activities​
